How to root your Motorola Atrix

atrixrootWhen I upgraded to the Atrix, I lost an ability to use my device as a wireless hotspot. This is, of course a feature that AT&T blocks . Wireless tether is something that I don't need often, but it's still something that when needed sure is nice to have. And then there were other features that are available to root users that I thought I could take advantage of. In general these are performance tweaks, handy apps such as screen capture apps that require root, and the ability to have more options. I'm thinking it's time.

I found it a very simple process actually, and I'm hoping that I can make it simple for you also, by including links and instructions here. Give me about 25 minutes start to finish and you'll have your Atrix rooted. Let's get started.

Preparation
  • Download 32-bit or 64-bit Drivers for your Atrix. (you probably already have them from the initial sync with your Atrix)
  • Download GingerBreak.exe
  • You will also need an SD card inserted on your Atrix, as the file that you will install are set to install to your card and not your Atrix.
Directions
  1. Install the appropriate Drivers on your PC. Download GingerBreak.exe onto your PC. (do not run GingerBread.exe at this time)
  2. On your Atrix, go to Menu, Settings, Applications, Development and check "USB Debugging".
  3. Plug your Atrix into your PC via the USB Cable. On your Atrix, pull down the menu from the Top and select "USB Connection". Select "NONE"
  4. On your PC, run Gingerbreak.exe installer.
  5. On your Atrix, you should see an application call "GingerBreak". 20110529053137
  6. Click "GingerBreak" to run the Root App.20110529053029
  7. Congrats! You have just rooted your Atrix. This will add an App called "Superuser". This is where all apps that require root will reside. Enjoy!

Root voids your warranty. The Gingerbreak file is installed to your card, but when you run it, it opens up the root folder on your device itself. One note: The only problem I have encountered since rooting is that my bluetooth doesn't always work. I googled it, and this is common with many rooted devices. Everything else is fine or better. Since I didn't use Bluetooth with this device, it's no big deal. If you do, you might consider not rooting.

Hey Paul, this doesn't work on 2.3. I took the upgrade to 2.3 Saturday morning. It overwrote the root with no real issues. (dcarico.com/.../...) But it won't root 2.3. I've Googled it and although I have found some ways to root, they just haven't been proven enough for me to chance it! With the boot loader now available to write to, it's just a matter of time before Gingerbreak or superoneclick introduce a simple, straight forward way to root! Until then, I'm trying to be patient.

I can't say that it works for the Basilian Atrix specifically. But I can say that it has been used successfully for many 2.2 devices.

Jeff, this exploit doesn't work on Android 2.3. This was for 2.2 only
