For years, when people would ask me about the future of tech, I would always tell them that the Smartphone was the computer of the future. That people basically would do all of their computing tasks through them, like buying groceries and buying cars. That computer would be their camera, their wallet, their communication, their newspaper, their life! The smartphone would one day be the one computer that most anyone needed and they would take it with them anywhere they went. Motorola took a huge step in making my prediction a reality this week when they unveiled the Atrix. An Android based smartphone that not only has a 4" display, but companion devices to hook it to your television and even convert it into a laptop.

This device is slated to appear on AT&T in the next few months and also other GSM Carriers in Europe. Pricing has not been announced, however, Motorola is hyping this as the most powerful smartphone ever. When one takes a look at the spec sheet, you really can't argue! The Atrix 4G boasts a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 4 inch qHD display, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, dual-cameras, fingerprint scanner, 1930 mAh battery, and support for AT&T’s HSPA+ network. The device will ship with Android 2.2 and it is upgradeable to Android 2.3. But it also includes what it calls as "Web Top" software. When docked with say, your HD Television, and a remote you bascially can do anything through it that you can do on your phone. Another accessory is a laptop like device that turns the Atrix into an 11.6" laptop.
This device with the laptop accessory probably meets most computing needs for the majority of people. Email, browsing, very portable, etc. Photo editing, Video, etc won't get covered through such a device. This is certainly one to watch however! And it could be my next Smartphone!
