Third Party Email Applications for the Treo 650

One of the things that the Treo 650 does really well is Email.  The Treo 650 includes an email application on all its ROMs called VersaMail.  VersaMail has a clean interface, and a good layout.  But there are several known issues with this application that make it unreliable.   Doing a search in this and other Treo forums will verify what I am trying to sum up here. If you don’t rely upon your email and you don’t use it often, VersaMail might be all you need. If your currently using VersaMail, you might want to bookmark PalmOne’s FAQ site.  If you start having problems with screen freezes, and resets, the solution probably resides in this Link.   But if your looking for something a little more robust, with lots of features, and more stable, you might consider a third party email application.  Below is a summary of three such applications. I would suggest that you take advantage of the Trials of all of these before purchasing. Each application has its pluses and minuses, so the trick is finding the one that is right for you!  The content below is borrowed from the manufacturers web sites with some commentary from me.

Also note, that Currently, Agendus does not support the storing of email and its attachments on the SD card of the Treo.  The makers of Agendus have promised this feature soon however.

Chatter Email

$39.95

Without a doubt, my favorite email application!  Chatter supports push IMAP email with up to eight email accounts. And you can have several more POP3 accounts set up also.  What sets Chatter apart from Agendus and Snapper is the Summary page.  You can set up Individual accounts with different colors to easily define which account received mail.  The summary screen allows you to view all accounts on one page. Each account is very customizable and probably has the best interface of all three of the apps featured here.  Chatter has set up a “test account” free for 6 months through everyone.net so that users can experience “push” email for themselves!  This application seems to be better supported than Agendus and Snapper, with lots of focus from the developer. Chatteremail's primary focus is to the more versatle, much faster IMAP email Protocol, but POP3 is fully supported.

Below is a list of Chatteremail's features

Snappermail

 Enterprise Edition $59.95

With SnapperMail you navigate email messages in the same way you use your phone -- with your finger. Our unique finger navigation mode allows simple onscreen navigation by increasing the hotspots for better "touchability"; for example, the scrollbar automatically expands to meet your finger if you touch a region nearby.  Take full control by checking your mail manually and skip large or unwanted messages in realtime ... Or switch to Auto Delivery, drop your phone in your pocket and have SnapperMail beep you when messages come in. No Size Limits, No Folder Limits, No Account Limits. Why have limits? With SnapperMail break free of the limits with the only wireless email app that has no limits on message size, message storage, folders, or mail accounts.
Unlimited Mail Storage! Have you ever returned to the office just to reference your old mail archives hidden in your desktop? It's in this type of scenario that SnapperMail 2's unique memory card archiving comes into its own. SnapperMail Premier and Enterprise editions can utilize the space on the memory card to store years of old messages for reference at anytime.  Ghost Messages, unique to just SnapperMail, are past messages on the IMAP4 server which are no longer online or outside of SnapperMail's synchronization window. If you opt to keep Ghosts, they'll show as greyed out messages. They're handy to keep around for reference.  Below the deceptively unfussed and alluring skin of SnapperMail 2 lies the heart of an enterprise-class workhorse. You can sync your mail from your employers centralized mail server to your Palm smartphone the same way you do with your office and home PC! In 2.0 we've developed the strongest IMAP4 implementation on any mobile platform, including compatibility with corporate mail systems such as Exchange, Notes/Domino and Groupwise. Sync any number of subfolders and look through mailboxes containing thousands of messages; all with the same intuitive SnapperMail interface that has won critical acclaim.
Summary:
So in conclusion, just let me say that any of these applications do mail really well with your Treo.  All have been proven to be very reliable, and using any of the trials will quickly show you just how feature rich all these applications are! Also, Agendus and Snapper have less feature rich versions in case there are features that you don't need.  A great option if you like the interface of one, but don't need all that it does! Snapper also features a unique navigation in how you can navigate and includes some additional software for managing you email. A file zipper, Diddlebug, and a jpeg viewer to name a few.

And finally let me say that Palm's VersaMail might be all you need!  But if you find you are longing for more, Take the time to test drive the Treo Email applications above!
